According to a recent estimate, 1.4 billion people live in developing countries and are enslaved by extreme poverty (IFAD, 2011). Poverty has been the target of international efforts. The Millennium Development Goals, an international initiative to end poverty and improve living standards globally by 2030, were introduced by the United Nations in 2000.
